"Preserving New Jersey's Railroad History" ... The Whippany Railway Museum is the only Museum in the North Jersey area devoted to the Garden State's rich Railroad and Transportation Heritage. The Museum features locomotive headlights, bells, whistles, original memorabilia and archival material relating to New Jersey rail lines and the Great Ocean Liners of the 20th Century. There are also two model railroads for visitors to enjoy, an indoor 'O' gauge layout, as well as a huge, outdoor 'G' Scale layout. The outdoor Rolling Stock Collection features Morristown & Erie Caboose No. 1, built in 1899; M&E Railbus No. 10, built in 1918; Rahway Valley Railroad Diesel Locomotives No. 16 (built 1951) and No. 17 (built 1954); Susquehanna R.R. "Whitcomb" Locomotive No. 150 (built 1942); Pennsylvania R.R. Cabin Car No. 477823 (built 1942); Delaware & Hudson Caboose No. 35886 (built 1913); and Steam Locomotive No. 4039, built in 1942, now listed on the NJ State & National Register(s) of Historic Places. A new addition is Steam Locomotive No. 385, built in 1907 for the Southern Railway as a fast-freight engine. No. 385 is a classic example of early 20th Century American locomotive design and craftsmanship. View the continuing restoration of Central Railroad of New Jersey Commuter Club Car "Jersey Coast", built in 1927, as well as the ongoing restoration of an authentic 1930's-era Ice Refrigerator Car. Once used to haul perishable products to market, Union Refrigerator Transit Lines Ventilated Refrigerator Car No. 50056 is one of a very few surviving examples of this type of railroad freight car remaining in the United States. Walk the grounds of an early-20th Century Railroad Yard, complete with the 1905 Whippany Station, Water Tank (the water tank is also listed on the NJ State and National Register(s) of Historic Places ) and other historic structures. Educational and Fun for the entire Family. Historic and "themed" train rides are offered throughout the year.
